Hashim Mahmoud

Hashim Mahmoud is an Eritrean novelist and short-story writer whose work is closely concerned with Eritrea’s history, collective memory, displacement and the human consequences of war and political upheaval. Writing primarily in Arabic, he has used fiction to bring Eritrean experiences and narratives to a wider Arab readership, combining historical and political contexts with an emphasis on individual lives and human experience. A graduate of the Sudan University of Science and Technology, Mahmoud is also a founding member of the Eritrean Writers’ Union in the Diaspora. His literary works include the novels The Road to Adal, The Scent of Gunpowder, September Dawn, New Colonia, Battalion 17 and Aziz, as well as the short-story collection Winter in Asmara. Several of his works have been translated into English and Tigrinya, extending the reach of his writing beyond Arabic-language audiences. Across his fiction, Mahmoud explores questions of homeland, freedom, exile and identity, while documenting significant periods in Eritrea’s modern history through literary narrative. His novel Aziz, for example, examines imprisonment, political oppression, dignity and resistance within the Eritrean context.
